HISTORY OF THE MEXICAN PATRIOTIC COMMITTEE
(COMITE’ PATRIOTICO MEXICANO)
In the early 1900’s, the small Hispanic community of Detroit, comprised of newly arrived auto workers and already established factory and railroad workers, began to celebrate customary patriotic events away from their native home. In 1923 a coalition was formed to prevent duplication of events which were being celebrated by various existing organizations and which created divisions in the community. Thus, the Mexican Patriotic Committee was formed with the participation of delegates of the existing groups. By consensus it became the principal organization responsible for conducting and celebrating, with due splendor, traditional patriotic events, such as Cinco de Mayo, which recognizes the victory of the Battle of Puebla over the French invasion, and 16 de Septiembre, which celebrates Mexico’s Independence from Spain.
Adopted in 1923 the organization’s motto: “RESPECT FOR COUNTRY, UNITY AND LIBERTY,” referred to the unique cultural traditions of Mexicans. The coalition promoted social standards and the exercise of human rights, which included aiding the needy and raising funds for a building to be known as “LA CASA DEL MEXICANO” and to provide for its maintenance.
Over the years, the Mexican Patriotic Committee has been involved in numerous civic events including the International Freedom Festivals and parades, celebrating both Canada’s Dominion Day and the Fourth of July, as well as the more recent Riverfront Ethnic Festivals. In the past, recognition was given to outstanding individuals for their contributions to the Mexican Community. Miss Mexico pageants were an annual event. La Casa del Mexicano became a reality in the late 70’s, however, the building was lost due to financial issues.
Now in it’s 91st year of existence, The Mexican Patriotic Committee continues to celebrate Cinco de Mayo with it’s annual Parade and festival, an event that citizens of all segments of Detroit look forward to. The recent return of the Miss Mexico Pageant provides the expansion of celebrating the Independence of Mexico. Other events sponsored by the MPC include Dia de los Muertos, Posadas during the Christmas season and participation in other Southwest Detroit Holiday events.
Now in the 21st century, we look forward to continuing to provide opportunities to celebrate our culture and traditions for future generations.
